The Car
There can be few cars so destinctive as a 70s Boattailed Buick Riviera. The radical design was initally penned for a small sports car something along the lines of a Corvette (!) but during development the car grew longer and fatter into someting worlds away from what the designers originally intended. The eye catching lines of the big boat led to it being chosen for roles in numerous film and Television appearances, the most notable being as the car driven by Detective Vecchio in the TV show, "Due South". As well as its striking appearance, the car has a very impressive set of specifications. Weighing 2 and a quarter tons, being 18ft long and packing an enormous 445Cui (7 litre!) V8 engine under the bonnet, the Buick Riviera does everything to reinforce the stereotype that American cars are huge, gas-guzzling land yachts. Sadly it was not to last, US federal emissions laws and the introduction of the 5 mile bumper meant that 1973 was the last year for the boattail Buick.
